Cali was our long-awaited miracle — the baby we dreamed of for nearly a decade. After nine years of infertility and miscarriage, we finally turned to IVF, hoping it would bring us the child we had always longed for. On our very first egg retrieval, five embryos made it to day five — and any IVF mum knows how truly special that is.

Our first transfer was successful. Six days later, we found out it had worked — our little “emby baby” was Cali.

But before birth, something wasn’t right. Cali was so incredibly sick that it began making me very unwell too. After a few misdiagnoses, our beautiful girl entered the world — born sleeping, before being resuscitated and rushed into intensive care. That moment began our four-month NICU journey.

At just ten days old, an MRI confirmed our worst fears — significant brain damage. Not a little, but a lot. The prognosis was bleak. We heard “the talk” — the one no parent should ever have to face — many times a day for weeks. For those who don’t know, “the talk” is when doctors tell you there is no chance of quality of life and begin discussions about turning off life support.

But Cali had other plans. She fought with everything she had, proving stronger and braver than anyone expected. Her resilience inspired ours — and through her, we learned the true meaning of strength, love, and purpose.

Caring for Cali opened our eyes to how hard it can be for families like ours to do the simplest things — going to a park, a café, or even a medical appointment — without fear, stress, or disappointment. Those experiences, and the love we have for Cali, became the driving force behind TravEse.

TravEse was created from lived experience — built to make life easier, safer, and more joyful for families caring for someone with disabilities.
